Family Reunion

All,
It's been so long since any of us posted, so here's a generic update. Joe, Whitney and Gracie will have to add the real pictures. In the future I promise to take some myself.

We started off the Hugh and Debbie Hardie reunion by attending the Hugh and Flora Hardie reunion. Joe Hardie, son of Hugh D, won the domino tournament. Many wonder'd if Ole Joe from Missoura had been there, if it woulda turned out differently. To Ole Joe we repeat the saddest words of humanity, "It could've been..."

The next morning was my favorite part of the big reunion - breakfast and softball. Softball is great for two reasons - 1) Softballs are bigger and therefore easier to hit 2) A 10 year is usually pitching which makes it even easier still. After hitting a few home runs I feel proud of myself for a few seconds before I remind myself of points 1 & 2, and then my head is deflated.
Later that Saturday, we headed to Branson, MO. Carl and Becca might disagree, but most in the Mid West know the truth. Branson shows draw all the true talent in the USA. New York City has nothing on this place!

We attended two shows while we were there. By we I mean that mom and dad graciously volunteered to watch the grand kids, so their kids could get out and play. We saw the infamous Jim Stafford. He was just as funny as when we saw him years ago. Joe helped us win the beach ball audience game. The next day we attended a show called SIX. Six brothers sing and provide bass, percussion and melody without any instruments. They were really good.

The same day we saw SIX we also did some Go Kart racing. The picture below is the only photo I actually took during the trip. This is Whitney coming around a corner pretty quick. She is an amazing driver.

This is the rest of the field behind Whitney. She "blew our doors off" as Hardie dad's say.

Anyway, the others have the pictures, so hope they can post them.

family basketball challenge

Thanks to Young Joe for putting together the "Hardie Boys" basketball challenge. Too bad more of you didn't get in on it. Joe said he was going to be paying a million dollars to the winner! I thought that was pretty generous of a guy just entering the world of work.

Despite having Kansas blow everyone's bracket to pieces (stupid chickenhawks) it appears Carl's lovely wife, Becca and your's truly are contending for the final prize. Becca has Kentucky playing KU in the championship game. I had Villanova (also out of the tourney). Pretty crazy tournament this year. Already lost a #1-Kansas, a #2-Villanova and a #3-Georgetown. I guess those earthquakes REALLY were trying to tell us something!

Landry is a full-time walker now and is working on learning to read, you can see here she loves reading. Pretty impressive for a kid who's first birhtday is still 13 days away!

New software

I got some new software that lets me put photos to music and make little videos. Of course I had to use my favorite subject for my first try. Enjoy! To get the video to play you have to click on the title at the top "New software." When a new screen opens, pause the music Dave has loaded and click the start button for this video.

Thanks for the pics Young Joe! Looks like the fam had a pretty good Christmas. Make sure Dave works on that banjo. We can have a big jam session sometime! That sure is a pretty baby you guys have. Be sure to put lots of photos on the blog so we can track her growth.

Landry went for her check-up yesterday and at 9 and a half months she is at the 50% level for weight, 19 lbs and height, 27 inches. She pulls up to everything. She could easily be walking in the next week. I'll post some photos another day.

Hey everyone. We just knew that you would love Elly's new choice of pink and purple. We hope everyone is doing well. I'm just sitting here in the perhaps the most boring class I've ever taken--History 201, and thought I would just blog a little.
This is everyone right after the baby blessing. Dave and Mandee ran back to the house to work on the roast that they graciously provided us for a celebration dinner. Thanks!
I gave Dave a banjo for Christmas that I had inherited from one of Mom's aunts. He's working on loosing his teeth before he starts playing.

Mom sure knows how to play eh?

Did we all go to Olive Garden when we all got together? Is the pope catholic? Does a bear poop in the woods? I rest my case.

Way to go Carl! I think Tyler has about decided to finish his accounting degree and may even give the old CPA exam a try. He'll probably be in touch to get any pointers you may have.

No, I'm not responsible for the color change of the blog. I think you have to be the "Blog-master" to do those kind of things. That would be either Dave or Mandee. I would have thought a guy who wears capri pants and packs a purse would find it lovely!

One thing I noticed about Eleanor when she was getting her first bath was that she has Hardie hands. That can be a very good thing if you want to milk cows. Feel blessed, Joe and Whitney, when Tyler was born about all you could see of him were his hands and feet. The rest, unlike little Eleanor Rose, was just plain "ugly." Laurie loves to tell Grammy's first remark upon seeing the ugly little thing, she said, "Oh, Joe, he looks just like you!" How's that for an ego buster? Thank goodness he's just about outgrown the ugly part! He still has huge hands and feet. Too bad he doesn't have some cows to milk!

Monday, November 30, marked the tenth anniversary of the my last seizure. Medicine and prayer have kept me almost normal for ten years. As you can tell, the fellow in this photo was in pretty bad shape. Look closely and you'll see the stitches braiding the top of my head together.

Each day is a new beginning for me toward another year of good health. I wouldn't wish my stuff on anyone, but I know it has made me a better man.

Parade day in Chillicothe

Most of us in the midwest have about stopped supporting the KC Chiefs, but not Laurie, she's stickin' with them to the end. Their mascot was in town for the holiday parade Saturday and she begged me to get a shot of her with KC Wolf. (That's her "I'm going to kill you when we get home smile!") Photo quality is pretty bad, but the subject makes it beautiful!

Little Landry experienced her first holiday parade in Chillicothe. It was really a pretty nice day. She liked the drum corp the best and the Marching Hornets. Amanda's afraid she's going to be a "band geek!"

Fun With Facial Hair

Last winter I decided to grow out a beard and take it for a spin around the neighborhood. My previous attempt at growing any facial hair was a nasty goatee in high school. So, I thought that since I have more than four hairs on my chin (sorry little Joe) now would be the perfect time to take my new facial hair for a test drive and see if I was a beard or mustache guy. Here is the finished product:
Then I thought, that looks pretty good, but lets try something else. So I rocked the "handle-bar" stache for a few days....until women and children started running away from me and gay guys started winking at me.It took me so long to grow it all out I couldn't just shave it all off right away so I also tried out these two options:
After my little experiment I determined that I really liked the beard. Aside from the occasional soup in my mustache I pulled it off quite well. I don't think I will grow it out again this winter, but I am definitely a beard man. That is all you need to know.

Sneak Peek

Here's a little sneak peek of Eleanor in utero. She was only 22 weeks in this ultrasound, so she's significantly bigger now (whopping 37 weeks), but I still thought you might want to see the little bean. The first one is a shot of her nose, mouth and chin. I think she's got Joe's lips.
This one is my favorite picture. Look at her cute little face! She's got her mouth open with her tongue visible and you can see one eye. (the other one is obscured by that black line) then her hand is up by her chin. Can you all see that? Some people tell me they can't.
Anyways, the minute I saw that picture I just "knew" my baby would be the cutest in the world. So much for me trying to remain an impartial judge of good looks.

Whit's Latest Photography Show

This week we hung Whitney's show that she received a grant to work on. It is entitled D-E-A-F, Images of a Visual Culture. She worked soooooo hard on it and I'm so proud of what she accomplished. She became interested in deaf culture when she took 3 years of sign language at school. She was able to mix her two talents very well. You should have seen her at the opening signing with all the deaf people there. It was quite the turn out! Hope you enjoy these

We kept this hybiscus plant after Grammy's Celebration of Life service. It blooms 5-6 times a year. The blooms only last one day then fall off. I caught it this day with several blooms. When I see those big splotches of red I always think of Mom's favorite color!

Going with our theme of the all-American weekend, what is more American than space travel? Seriously, NASA is one of the best things that Houston has to offer and we had a blast visiting. (OK, really bad pun - but I promise I didn't mean for it to come out that way)
This is mission control. It looks a lot bigger in the movies.
This is a cool replica of a space ship that you can walk in. There are mannequins floating around that help you imagine what it's like to work in space. Keep in mind - this is an enclosed space we were walking into and we were all in line. Joe had the audacity to pass gas in such a situation! As I was standing right behind him I bore the brunt of it. I was so outraged that I vowed to never go into space with him.
Deb and Nate had no such issue. Here is a picture of them with a moon rover. They made it to the moon!!!

Discovery Green Park

Discovery Green Park was arguably my FAVORITE place in Houston. I just loved going there in the evenings. The skyline and the lighting - it was all so cool. Not to mention they have Yoga in the park, dance aerobics, fountains for kids to play in, sail boat race, and an sculptural piece by Jean Dubuffet (who I studied in art history - super cool)

This park is also dear to us because it is where Joe and I began our modeling career. I think we're gonna be big.

America - the greatest country I know. Joseph Hardie, one of the greatest Americans I know. When you put the two together you have one heck of a celebration!
Joe's birthday dinner. Our friends Deb and Nate came out to help us celebrate! We loved having visitors in Houston.

Joe and Nate are best friends. They were pretty excited to try the crab my step-dad boiled for the 4th of July.
Here is the feast - cajun style crab cook-off.
Joe and Nate were a little shocked by the intense flavors. Everything was so spicy it made your fingers burn to touch it. No joke.
And of course I was a little shocked by the condition of Joe's breath after consuming said crab.

Houston + Paul

We had to go to Austin and check out South Congress Street. I bought at pearl snap cowboy shirt. Dad said if I ever outgrow it that he wants it.

This was a glass blowing place we stopped in.

We went to the Galveston again with Whitney's brother Chad and sister Samantha.

Everyone thought it would be fun to bury me in the sand...then turn me into a mermaid. You might laugh, but I was a pretty hott mermaid.

We went to a skate park by our house a few times with Whitney's brother. He used to be pretty big into skating but this park made him have second thoughts about going pro.

We went climbing at a place in Houston with a family that Whitney was really close with growing up. My forearms looked like Nephi's when it was all over.

We did a little fishing at the lake too. This was by far the biggest fish I ever caught from the Lake of the Ozarks

I also caught a walleye late one evening. Don't have the pics of that one yet, but stay tuned.

Naturally, Tim had to catch one bigger than mine. He can really get irritating sometimes!

Swimming with Sharks...

Alright, I know what you all are thinking...Carl is actually going to post something on the blog? Yes, yes I am. I figured I would fill everyone in on the NY branch of the Hardie tree and let you know what is going on in the northeast.

The biggest news is that we just got back from Becca's brother's wedding in Hawaii. Its' a rough life but someone had to go and support him. Believe me, it took a lot of arm twisting to get me to go, but then I figured if we HAD to go, we were going to do it right and spend a couple of weeks there (heavy sarc). So, here are some pics and some hightlights from the trip.
These are from Haunama Bay. We went snorkeling here the first day and it was amazing. We liked it so much we didn't realize we were getting severely sunburned. Ouch!

The next day we hit up the north shore for a little surfing, Giovanni's Shrimp Truck (don't knock it until you've tried it), and Matsumoto's famous shaved Ice.

Next it was scuba diving before we headed off to the big island to meet up with Becca's family for the wedding.
After the wedding we checked out the volcano park and the black-sand beach before heading back to Oahu. We stayed on the North Shore the second week for more surfing and to check out the Polynesian Cultural Center.We also checked out Pearl Harbor where we toured the USS Missouri where the treaty that ended WWII was signed, the memorial over the USS Arizona, and the USS Bowfin submarine.However, I think the highlight of the trip was swimming with sharks off of the North shore of Oahu. We went about 3 miles off the coast and got in a cage that floats on top of the water. (I told them I didn't need the cage but they made me watch them from inside it anyway.) I punched a couple of them in the nose and they took off but here are some pictures of the others. They were all about 10 to 12 ft. long.

It was a great trip and I will try to post the link to all of our pictures on the blog.

World Traveler Returned

This is Mandee on the Great Wall of China! The class toured the wall same day they went to the Water Cube and the Bird's Nest from the 2008 Olympics. Her dad put together the trip, so every minute was planned to the minute. They had a good time. More pictures to come...

They spoiled Mandee rotten on the trip - buying her meals, helping her negotiate better prices with the local vendors and making sure she didn't get lost. San Antonio has something called the river walk. Its pretty fun to walk along the shops and they have great Tex-Mex.

Whitney doesn't understand why I love the Alamo so much. I think it must be a man thing. I mean, what red-blooded American male ain't dreamed of shoot'n a 4 foot musket and fight'n off Santa Anna with you buds? Wake up America!

The Houston Zoo was a good time. We found out that you need 5 years experience working with elephants to be an elephant keeper. Whitney's only got two...

Whitney knows that I'll never have facial hair like that so she took full advantage at the zoo.

I got tired, so I took a seat by the smart goat.

We headed down to Galveston for a little fun at the beach. Their sandcastles are bigger than their sharks.

I think it's rule that if you fish for sharks, you have to smoke cigars.

Nate got to see what the bed of a pick-up looks like at Grandpa's house. I think he and Paul are going to be great Hardie Men and would love to get to know them better as they grow up. Nate was a little confused when Grandma told him Uncle Joe was there. This Uncle Joe doesn't really look much like the much handsomer "Young Uncle Joe!" I think the grey hair was kinda confusing!

These phones with cameras in them are wonderful. In the past, I would have had to get the camera out, make a bunch of noise and probably miss this wonderful "Kodak Moment!" Now I just whip the ol phone out and voila, pic of Laurie Sleeping. Please don't say anything to her about the photo being here. She hates when I get pictures of her with here mouth open! We all had a wonderful time at the reunion. Trust me, Landry really doesn't cry ALL THE TIME, but a six hour car ride for a 7-week-old is asking a lot. I'll post more pics of the reunion as I get them off our cameras and phones.

There's been lots of "nesting" at Amanda & Tim's house the past few weeks. The room's been painted and wainscoating with chair rail has been added. Tim made the crib and it is receiving the final coats of finish this week. Laurie's step father, Lee, made a dresser/changing table to match the crib. We brought it home Tuesday and it is beautiful. This little girl is coming into the world in style! All the clothes have been washed in Dreft and are organized in the closet by size. There's a good chance many outfits will sell in a garage sale some day with the tags still on!

As you can see, Amanda is nearing the "pop" stage of pregnancy. Laurie and I have developed a severe case of "tired of waiting-itis." We hear it is quickly cured once the baby arrives!

Whitney is Nate's new favorite from the Joe and Whitney Hardie family. She slipped him a little candy and the new bond was sealed! Just kidding. Nate warmed up to her naturally.

Thomas the Train ranked no 1 on Nate's list of best presents for Christas 2008. Way to go Grammy Hardie! "Hello Sirtopamhat." "Hello Thomas."

Grandpa and Paul got to do some Hardie men bonding. Paul now knows all about Spudman now. He mentioned after Dad left that he wants to go to Oklahoma State for college and then run a farm.

34 years this May and still smiling. Quite an accomplishment! Thanks for all the meals, presents and fun. It was good having the Oklahoma crew out here this year. The drive is more than adventurous, but it does make for good memories. Look out 2009!

Chile Trip Post 2 - Update on the People

Chilena = carinosa = kind/loving. One thing I learned on my mission about Chilenos is that they are some of the kindest and most loving people. They will give you food when they have none or their own bed to sleep in if you did not have one yourself. Our last Sunday in Chile, a woman I never met as a missionary sat next to us at church, shared her hymn book with Mandee and asked if we would like to eat at her house that afternoon. We did. She served a mission 20 years ago in Chile, so I think this pose must have been popular back then (she requested it).

This is the Batuco gang. My last area was Batuco. There are 2 main families here - the Roldan family and the Morales family. We helped reactivate the Roldans; a few are still going. It brough great joy to see them and catch up. The Morales family joined the church a few months before I arrived, but we visited them often. The dad found a Book of Mormon on a dumpster, picked it up, read it and desired to be baptized!

This is part of the Laundeta family. The mom and brother weren't home at the time, but we had some good laughs with the dad. He is a clown. Mom and Dad were inactive when we met them and the children had not been baptized. None of them are going to church now. It's hard to see people set something aside that means so much to you. I still have hope though.

This little lady is Iris Galves Bacho. I used to think her name was "Idis", but when I handed her her baptismal certificate she said, "That's not my name! My name is spelled with an "r"." I thought to myself, "Yes. Iris is a beautiful name and one I recognize. No wonder I had never heard of Idis." Anyway, Iris is an evangelical preacher now. It was wonderful to sit in her dinning room again and get to know her family better.

Daro, Daro, Daro... Well, needless to say, this visit was the must adventurous of all of them. My companion Elder Ramsay and I once prayed that people would find us instead of us finding them. Daro's mom stopped us in the street several days later to inform us her son wanted to be baptized. However, things were not what they once were at Daro's house. He remained faithful 2-3 years, but then his grandfather died, the most influential person in his life. He went off the deep end for the next 2-3 years. Sounds like he's starting to do better, but he's still involved with gangs. He hinted several times that he would like some money. We gave him none.

OK, family, here's the deal. I've always hated the question, "What do you want for Christmas?" Not sure why, but I just feel awkward asking people to get things for me. So Joe and I decided to post lists online. We think it's a great way to show some of the things we're interested in - think of the possibilities! If everyone posted a list, we would know what kind of things Carl likes for his birthday, or something Mandee has always wanted Dave to get her for their anniversary. List making is a beautiful thing.

Here is my official "anytime-of-the-year-I-will-surely-be-pleased-to-receive-any-of-these-things" list:

-I'm a huge fan of NPR,(Joe teases me relentlessly) and from their shop I like this book, this CD, or this book. And, who doesn't need this collectible ornament to adorn their tree? I don't even care that it says 2003 on it - that's why it's on clearance!

- Mandee was telling me that she's reading Anne of Green Gables (probably my favorite books EVER) and I was thinking it would be nice to own books 4-6 (Windy Poplars-Ingleside) as I received the first three when I was a little girl.

-I think this Calendar is so cool. Made from Polaroid pictures, it is beautiful and simple and I love it. My little picture doesn't do it justice - go see it on the website.
- I only own one pair of jeans at a time and I wear them until I get holes. I think it might be wise to invest in a second pair, so a gift card to GAP is always appreciated.

- My friend told me my wallet looks like her mom's...ouch. Either of these would be suitable replacements:

- Now that I cut my hair short, I should probably wear more earrings. Here are some styles I like, courtesy of Etsy:- I'd be lying if I said I didn't dream about this lens at night, but for a gift like that Santa would need some mighty deep pockets.

- Return to Me is quite possibly my favorite movie ever. Make fun all you want, but I stand by the argument that this film has it all.

- If none of the above items strike your gift giving fancy, there are always the standby options: loads of cash, cruise to Greece, entirely new wardrobe, or a 1965 Corvaire - any of these options are acceptable.

Whew, that's a lot of wishing...it wears me out. Just let it be said that if I receive a journal I am highly insulted. Journaling is great, but it is obvious the person knows nothing about me. I have about five unused journals sitting on my bookshelf. It's totally the standby gift for every young woman.

Carl and Becca: I am begging you to post a list on the blog. For your own sakes. Joe thinks he knows the perfect gift for each of you - BYU sweatshirts. Need I say more?

Chile Trip Post #1

This is downtown Santiago, Chile. You can see the business district of Providencia and Las Condes in the distance. The neighborhood most easily distinguished in this picture is considered one of the nicest in Chile.

This is Santa Lucia, an outdoor mall with all sorts of artisan work. We did a lot of Christmas shopping here, so Grace and Joe can look forward to a Chilean Christmas. Becca's belated birthday present came from this place too.

On our third or fourth night in Santiago we asked the hotel clerk for some place to eat dinner. He recommended the "Giratorio." It turned out to be a fancy restaurant that spins on the top of a tall building. You can see almost all of Santiago.

(If we had known it was going to be so nice we would have dressed for the occasion!)

One of the first "Chilean" foods I treated Manee to was hotdogs! They accurately call them completos - meaning completes. On top you will see tomatoes, avacado and mayo. Mandee loved them, and we're going to start making them at home.

Return to Chile

After 6 1/2 years, I am finally going back to visit Chile and the people I met there. This is a dream come true, and it is finally starting to feel real. I have been reading in Spanish about 30 minutes each day for a couple of months now, and Mandee gave me a CD with Spanish conversations that I listened to on the way to work. I hope its like riding a bike; Mandee's not worried - and she doesn't even speak Spanish!

We've heard back from a few people I met during my second year, and my trainer, who was from Santiago, has also given us his contact info so we can get together.

I can't wait to eat the food. I put on 20-25 lbs there, so I'm already recalling favorite ice cream shops, hot dog stands, "doughnut" places and other fine delicacies. Wow! Anyway, we'll take pictures since I didn't as a missionary and make some posts.

Bear Lake Adventures

Nate and I cheered on everyone skiing or boarding. Last time he mastered the simple phrase, "Go Mommy! Go!" This time he was a bit more timid in the boat. Perhaps it's because last time he got busted throwing out Grampa Balling's boat tools and instruments. He is still confident when it comes to honking the horn -- in or out of the water.
"Go Mommy! Go!" Can you tell this woman just had a baby four months ago! Woot! Woot! She ran a 1/2 marathon a week previously and now she's cutting the water like dolphin. And no, Dad, she's surprisingly not from Collinsville, OK.

It is with excitement and joy that we announce the passing of our dear friend the Buick. Born in 1997 to goodly parents. this fine sedan was driven by at least two owners. She handled well and was a friend to many a teen-age driver and mom. She was sold yesterday to a new owner at 6:24 p.m. She left for half the price she deserved but those that knew her commented, "That's just like the Buick to help others before herself." We'll miss you Buick, but our driveway is always open...

We went to a little get together with Karen and Merrill, and John and Rachel. John and Rachel took off to Tennessee for Optometry school. We'll miss them!

Whitney is scared of pretty much anything. She doesn't even like climbing but she still is amazing. I'm saving up for gear....one carabiner at a time.
Every Sunday Whitney makes faces at any kid close enough to look at Whitney. Sometime mothers take pity on her baby-craze and let her hold their kids.

In other news, I got into business school and am planning my graduation in 2 years with a councilor tomorrow! Wahoo! Whitney is working hard at her business and internship and we are enjoying every bit of summer we can. I surprised her with a party on her birthday this last Thursday. It was great to see her appreciated by so many people. We love you all!

Joe is too modest to brag about himself......(I know some of you find that hard to believe), but I just wanted everyone to know that Joe earned himself an academic scholarship for next year and I couldn't be more proud of him! Imagine that, even with all my teasing him about being an egghead, he still managed enough study time to earn a scholarship.

The Birds

Hampton and Roxy were two house finches that built a nest on our porch. Their babies hatched before we even knew that there were babies! When the three little tykes flew away we felt like proud parents, beginning our life again...as empty nesters.

Whitney enjoyed several close encounters on our porch. She was like kinda like the the crazy woman on Quigley Down Under, trying to raise a baby that just wasn't hers.

Paul has already changed so much since these pictures were taken, but I thought the rest of the family might enjoy seeing more photos of newborn Paul. Gotta stick to the rule -- newest member of the family has the most photos. I'd like to share a few things I've learned about Paul Hardie.

1. He LOVES to sleep!

2. He has LONG toes.

3. When he's not asleep, he can make a lot of different faces.

4. He's a fast learner -- here's Dave trying to teach him to smile.

P-diddy and Nate dog

This is a classic picture of Nate with his pacifier and blanky. He got so attached to his pacifier that he started getting sores around his mouth. We weened him from it a couple weeks ago and now he is very attched to his blanky. His poor blanky is so worn that everyone who sees it cannot help but tell us that his blanky has seen better days.

At Nates last doctor appointment he was in the negative 5 percentile for his weight, 30th percentile for his height and 60th percentile for his head size.

Since we have had the baby, Nate has been spending a lot of his time with his dad. They have gotten a lot closer. One morning Dave put on a winter hat so Nate had to put on his winter hat too. Usually he hates having to wear it but since his dad was wearing one he had to do the same.

The two brothers. Nate loves his little brother. In fact, we have to constantly tell Nate to be soft with Paul since he wants to smother him with his hugs.

Here are some new born pictures of Paul. When he gets upset he really likes to stick out his lower lip at you. The nurses said he was born with it sticking out.New borns have real good jump reflexes. If a loud noise is made they seem to jump a mile. Paul must have jumped at a loud sound while sleeping and fell right back asleep in the same position. In this picture Paul is a month old. He has grown real fast. New born clothes are now too tight on him. At his two week appointment he had already gained a pound, which doesn't happen that often. The doctor was surprised. We are excited to have a baby that is on the charts for his weight. Hurray!

Do they look alike? These pictures were both taken at about the same age. Paul is on the left and Nate is on the right. I think they look completely different but others say they look exactly alike.

San Francisco

This is the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I learned a lot about What people consider art here but it was a lot of fun, since Whit and I both work in an art museum now.

The grate I'm standing on allows you to see 5 stories straight down. Kind of trippy.

The Lorie's Diners were on every corner it seemed like. Good burgers and fun times.

We took to the city life like fish to water.

Lumbard Street. The curviest street in the world. If only I took my long board....

The sea lions sit and bark on the pier all day. They smell bad but they are a hoot and a half to watch.

We went on a short trip around the bay in a tour boat. This is when we're heading out.

It was kind of windy. You can tell my hairs thinning.

There were some old battle ships harbored along the shore that people tour.

It was huge! It creeps out of the clouds and low lying fog.

We circled around Alcatraz and the captain of the boat told us about escape stories and all the history of the island.

We go suckered into a cheap pearl ($9) to open your very own! We thought it was a steal!

Part of the custom is to tap three times and ring a bell and say "aloha!" Goodbye oyster, hello pearl.

We thought that this is where the pearl story would end but the lady really just wanted to sell us really expensive settings for Whitney's pearl. We shut her down and she seemed much less friendly after that.

Turns out I love starfish...who knew?

Food on the wharf is just so good. The candied apples were a treat.

It is a longstanding tradition to get bread bowls on the wharf with clam chowder

Good ol' blazing saddles. We rented bikes for all of our 3rd day. It was a blast but our saddles were definitely blazing by the end of the day.

In Japan Town you can see the remnants of alien space craft.

If you are going to china town- avoid the Chinese Eatery. Unless you want to throw up.

Newest Member of the Hardie Family!

Mandee and Paul having a bonding moment. They have spent two days at the hospital together and will leave Monday morning. I have this next week off work, so we'll be able to help each other out. Plus, Mandee gave me a list of things to do around the house. It won't be a vacation!Just the four of us. Nate is still adjusting; he knows something different is happening. He seems a little jealous. He won't say his new brother's name as easily as he did before Paul officially joined the family. The nurses recommended that we keep him as involved in the process as possible. They recommended little things like having Nate get the diapers for the baby.

He's got his mother's looks and his father's name - at least his middle name. Paul is his first name, and that is Mandee's grandpa's name. It was her mom's dad; he passed away from the disease in the early to mid 90's. Her grandma came over and told us some stories about him. He was a pilot in the air force, good sense of humor, always complimentary to her, loved to play with his kids, served faithfully in 4 bishoprics, faithful home teacher, wonderful singer, likable guy, etc.

This is just before Mandee went in for surgery. They made me dress up in scrubs. Once Mandee was in the surgery room they gave her the medication she needed. It made her quite nauseous.

This is a good face shot. It is difficult to describe the feelings we felt having a baby again. It is just as good or better than the first. There is less uncertainty and fear, and the joy is palpable. We cannot believe we will have two kids the house now!
The nurses always wrap him like a little burrito; they say it is good so the limbs move less and the baby stays warm. It makes the transition from womb to open air a little easier.

The nurse just finished weighing and measuring Paul before this camera shot. He is a half a day away from his circumcision. Ouch! The pediatrician later told us that he took it like a man and didn't even cry. He must be a tough one.

Well, I told Becca about the challenge posted on the blog a few weeks ago. She doesn't check the blog regularly so I explained to her that Nate called her out and she had to represent or all of my street cred would be ruined. Then, even after I built this this challenge up to a live or die scenario, she turned to me and nonchalantly replied, "I don't do funny faces." I responded with something to the effect of, "what do you mean you don't do funny faces? Everyone does funny faces." After this discussion, I sat there perplexed for a while trying to remember a single funny face that Becca has made, and I couldn't. She doesn't make the silly baby faces, she doesn't do stupid poses in pictures, and she doesn't even cross her eyes. However, she does give me the look of death with her hooked-finger, furrowed brows, and death-stare when I do something that upsets her. Since I am such a perfect husband I rarely see this so called "mean-look" of hers, but it has been known to kill small animals on occasions. I don't think anyone has been able to capture this terrifying "look" on film yet, but it is now my goal to risk life-and limb to get a picture and post it on the blog. I may not live through the experience, so if you never hear from me again, know that I died trying to show the world Becca's mean-face.
